What is a Care Taxi?

Not Just a Taxi — A Caregiver on Wheels

Sasayaka-maru is “Care Taxi” (介護タクシー)

In Japan, a “Care Taxi” (介護タクシー) is a special transport service staffed by certified caregivers. Unlike regular taxis or ride-hailing apps, our driver is a licensed Kaigo Fukushi-shi (Certified Care Worker) with over 15 years of hands-on nursing experience.

This means we don’t just drive you — we provide full physical assistance: bed-to-wheelchair transfers, help with toileting, monitoring your condition during long trips, and emergency response if needed. For travelers with disabilities visiting Hokkaido, this is the difference between worrying about every moment and simply enjoying the journey.

Our vehicle is equipped with a wheelchair ramp, so you ride in your own wheelchair — no painful transfers into a car seat. Family members ride alongside you.

\Frequently Asked Questions/

Everything You Need to Know

Planning accessible travel in Japan can feel daunting. Here are the answers to the most common questions.

Can I stay in my wheelchair during the ride?

Yes. Our vehicle has a built-in ramp. You roll directly into the vehicle and are secured with professional tie-downs and seatbelts. There’s no need to transfer out of your wheelchair.

What types of wheelchairs do you accommodate?

We can accommodate standard manual wheelchairs, lightweight folding wheelchairs, and most reclining wheelchairs. For power wheelchairs, please share the dimensions and weight when you contact us so we can confirm compatibility. Note that Japanese spaces tend to be narrower than in Western countries, so compact wheelchairs work best.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking at least 2 weeks in advance, especially during peak seasons (snow festival in February, cherry blossoms in May, lavender season in July). For multi-day itineraries, 1 month advance booking is ideal.

Do you speak English?

We can communicate in English via email for booking and trip planning. During the ride, our driver speaks basic English, and we can use translation tools for detailed communication. All written materials (itinerary, pricing) are provided in English.

Can family members ride with me?

Absolutely. Our vehicle seats the wheelchair user plus additional passengers (typically 2–3 family members). There is no extra charge for companions.

What about accessible toilets during the trip?

Our driver knows the locations of accessible restrooms (多目的トイレ) along every route. Japan actually has excellent accessible toilet coverage at major stations, rest areas, and tourist spots. We plan comfort stops into every itinerary.

Is this more expensive than a regular taxi?

The metered fare is comparable to a regular taxi, with an additional care assistance fee (¥1,000–¥3,000 per trip) for the nursing service. Given that you receive a certified caregiver, wheelchair-accessible vehicle, and door-to-door physical assistance, most travelers find it excellent value.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept cash (Japanese yen) and major credit cards. Payment is made after each trip — no prepayment or deposit required.
